International Bereaved Mother's Day

International Bereaved Mother’s Day is traditionally on the First Sunday of in May. The day is designed to acknowledge and honor the motherhood of women who have lost children to miscarriage, stillbirth, SIDS, and other types of pregnancy or infant loss; particularly for those who feel forgotten on traditional Mother’s Day.

Bereaved Mother’s Day was founded by Carly Marie Dudley following the death of her stillborn son, with the aim to provide support for grieving mothers. Ironically, the original Mother’s Day was founded by Anna Jarvis in honor of her own bereaved mother.

You can honor bereaved mothers and their children by lighting a candle, attending a support event (such as remembrance walks), by planting a tree/plant or making a donation in honor of the child.

If you know someone who has lost a child, please reach out to them and just let them know you are thinking of them. As a mother who has lost a child, I’m always grateful when someone remembers my baby boy!

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

  • Google Calendar ICS

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Designated by President Ronald Reagan in 1988, for the purpose of raising awareness for families who have experienced the loss of a child. This is what he said:

"When a child loses his parent, they are called an orphan. When a spouse loses her or his partner, they are called a widow or widower. When parents lose their child, there isn't a word to describe them. This month recognizes the loss so many parents experience across the United States and around the world. It is also meant to inform and provide resources for parents who have lost children due to miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, stillbirths, birth defects, SIDS, and other causes. Now, therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the month of October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.  I call upon the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities."
